Restoration And Conservation Project Of Dome, Roof And Associated Works Masjid Kapitan Keling Georgetown, Pulau Pinang

History

Masjid Kapitan Keling is probably the most well-known mosque in the state of Pulau Pinang and on the mainland. Built in the 18th century, the Kapitan Keling Mosque is the oldest formally established mosque by Indian Muslim traders in George Town. It combines the influences of Indian-Mughal architecture with Gothic, Moorish and Roman Renaissance designs. The mosque is named after Caudeer Mohideen Merican, popularly known as Kapitan Keling, the leader of the Indian Muslim community during the early 19th century. While the original building was considerably smaller, population and income growth provided it with means of expansion until it became the largest mosque in town. Its rich heritage and unique architecture makes it one of Penang’s icons, as well as being part of the famous ‘Street Of Harmony’ with the Goddess of Mercy Temple and St George’s Church as it’s same-street neighbours. Masjid Kapitan Kling is listed as a heritage building by the National Heritage Department of Malaysia.

Background Of The Restoration And Conservation Project

Over the last 15 years there have been several initiatives implemented to conserve and manage the mosque site and the building’s fabric in order to maintain the religious observances, practices and traditions within and around a safe, stable and presentable property. This has substantially been very successful in most areas however there remains one aspect which still requires urgent attention. This relates to the condition and performance of the principal weather protection elements of the mosque building namely the main copper dome and the terracotta tile roof areas. The dome in particular is leaking excessively.

An on-site investigation of the defective condition of the main dome and the roof area of the mosque was made from 1-5 June 2010 by Mr Bruce Pettman and Ms Mary Knags heritage conservation architects of the NSW Governement Architect‟s Office, Sydney (under the auspices of AusHeritage Ltd), Mr Haris Fadzilah Abdul Rahman of Arkitek Urbanisma, Butterworth, Penang and Ms Gwynn Jenkins architectural heritage researcher, Penang. Additional advice has been obtained from conservation materials specialists Mr Desmond Corby (GAO) and traditional roofing specialist Mr Lee Adamou (NSW Public Works).

It provides the findings of the investigations and recommends remedial works to protect and maintain the building especially then main dome and roof areas. A key concern was the current rain water leaks and staining of the interior wall surfaces near the top of the central dome tower spaces as well as at other ceiling locations round the interior of the mosque.

The objectives of this project are as follows: –

To solve the water leakage problem especially on the main dome area and tiled roof areas.
To provide safe access to the roof areas to ensure monitoring and maintenance tasks can be performed more regularly as well as being supervised effectively.

Findings From The Investigation And Condition Assessment

The following information provides findings of each element of the mosque, its current conditions as observed so that the restoration approach could be determined.

Water penetration through the surface nails and lap joints of the main copper pans
Minor rust on the internal mild steel framework/portel trusses
Several damages to the timber boardings and ribs
Water staining, white mould and dry rot growth on the timber boardings and ribs
Bituminous building paper was substantially perforated by the fixing of multiple nails on the copper pans
The dome access door was in poor condition
Main dome rc gutter with a raised base hindered the water discharge
The puddled water seeped through the wall fabric into the central tower and staining the walls
Water seepage through the fixed glazed clerestory windows at the main dome tower
There were many broken roof tiles causing water seepage
No proper access to the roof top for the maintenance work

Nails on the existing copper pans. All the water discharge holes at the crenulated parapet are sealed.

Repair Strategy

A) SITE ESTABLISHMENT

Confirm construction programme

Include confirmation of the schedule of required inspection, samples and test
plans.
Setting out of site office to facilitate the execution of work.

Construction access, compound & storage

Establishment of safe & secure site compound & storage facility on site.

Scaffold / Weatherproofing of scaffold

The scaffolding to have overhead weather protection against sunlight & rain.
The design shall include for safe access for all people at any time during the project.

B) ROOF & DOME ACCESS WORKS

Installation of a permanent folding ladder system from the main roof to the main
dome
Installation of a walkway (duckboard) access systems around the main roof gutters
(over parapet gutters)
Installation of a roof domer access door onto the main roof
Installation of a duckboard system within the main roof
Installation of access ladder system and platform within the Masjid building
Installation of lighting and electrical points inside the main roof and inside the dome

C) THE MAIN DOME

Restoration of internal timber boardings and ribs. Seriously rotten timber element
shall be replaced or strengthened.
Application of boracide treatment to the existing timber elements
Corroded steel frame work to be treated with anti-corrosion coating
To carry out trial repair of 1/8th section of the dome cladding with the removal of all
the nails and screws within the pans of the copper cladding in that section and filling
of the remaining holes with copper patch and copper patches
The vertical and horizontal flat seam joints between the existing pans of copper to be
cleaned and sealed with polyurethane sealant
To carry out water showed test in order to determine the effectiveness of the proposed
trial
The existing screed of the box gutter to be removed and installed a new shallow
screed c/w waterproofing system
Remove exterior downpipes and other redundant fittings from the dome\
Provide new lead weatherings to the cornice to direct water away from the dome tower
Repair windows by replacing broken sections of the glass
Repaint all sections of dome tower

D) CLAY TILED ROOF

Replace broken delaminated or loose tiles or cappings. Make good or replace
flashings and gutters
Realign the existing tiles facing west

E) INTERIOR MAKING GOOD

Make good interior as a result of any impact damage or spills during the work in
particular in relation to the new internal access ladder and platform

Recognition & Award

We are honored to receive the “PAM Awards 2013” under Category 7 Conservation for this project.

Summary

The conservation and restoration of Kapitan Keling mosque was commenced on 15th March 2011 and accomplished on 30th August 2011 with the total duration of approx. 5.5 months without delay as per in the contract period.

The scope of works as summarized below: –

Restoration of the main copper dome externally and internally
Restoration of the dome gutter, cornice and dome tower
Restoration of 2 nos of small concrete domes
Restoration and reinstatement of main clay tiled roof
Construction of dormer roof access
Construction of catwalks at the parapet wall above the external perimeter gutter
Construction of catwalk above the ceiling level
Construction of cat ladder inside the prayer hall
Making good interior

The works were carried out carefully and meticulously all in accordance with the specifications and instructions and also with the tight supervision and monitoring by the S.O to ensure the quality of work is maintained.

This project was handled and managed by Mr. Ong SW (General Manager) of Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd to ensure and achieve the combination of quality planning, quality assurance and quality control.

Kuala Lumpur, 4th November 2023 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was invited by PAMPresident and PAM Human Settlement, Heritage and Conservation Committee (HHC) to present about the case studies of heritage conservation and redevelopment in Malaysia and Singapore which have been completed by Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd throughout the years.

Timeline

Year 2001 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd have successfully completed a cultural heritage conservation in St. Paul and A Famosa Santiago Gate, Malacca. We had strengthened of the stone structure ands arch due to the weathering impact and deterioration of material.

Year 2002 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was engaged by JKR to conduct rehabilitation & restoration work on the Istana Hulu and conversion from a palace into a museum building. Now, it is called the Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery, which was officially opened in 2003.

Year 2007 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was appointed to restore the 2-storey premises at Lebuh Gereja , Penang. Since it was designated to be the conservation buildings, hence conservation repair methods were applied to the respective buildings. Strengthening of masonry structure were performed due to occurrence of the settlement problem.

Year 2008 – Urban planning concept was introduced to the historical traditional Malay village known as The Morten Village (Malay: Kampung Morten). It was designated a history village under Malacca’s Preservation and Conservation Enactment in 1989, the region has since developed to become a popular tourist destination. Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was engaged to restore and conserve the 88 units of traditional Malay Timber Houses at Morten Village, Melaka.

Year 2010 – Waterproofing to flat roof due to water leakage problem was performed by Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd at Masjid Ubudiah, Kuala Kangsar. The mosque is located beside the Royal Mausoleum on Jalan Istana at Bukit Chandan in Kuala Kangsar. The mosque was finally completed in late 1917 at a total cost of $24,000 or RM200,000. The mosque is now a symbol of pride for the people of the state of Perak.

Year 2011 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was appointed to restore Masjid Kapitan Keling’s Dome , Penang. We have restored the copper and concrete domes due to water leakage problem. We are honoured to receive the “PAM Awards 2013” under Category 7 Conservation.

Year 2011 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was ventured into the Singapore market. We have successfully restored the Capitol Building, Singapore and NCO Club, Singapore. We have restored and reinstate the roof, façade, doors & windows of the respective buildings.

Year 2016 – Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was engaged to restore the flat roof & dome roof waterproofing works c/w reinstatement of mosaic finishes in Masjid Negara, Kuala Lumpur. We are honoured to receive “Mapei XVIII International Reference Grand Prix – 2019 Best Projects Award” for the restoration and conservation works. This project was also published in Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU) Nara International Journal.

Year 2017 –The construction of Malaysia’s Parliament House started in 1961 and was completed in 1963. On July 6, 2007, the Parliament Complex was declared a heritage site under Clause 67 of National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645) and further gazetted on June 6, 2011. It was proudly to announce that Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was engaged to perform façade restoration, structural strengthening, pinnacle roof repair, and waterproofing work according to the conservation method

Year 2023 –Rumah Sri Aman , where the Sri Aman Declaration was signed between Sarawak government and the communists on October 21, 1973, will be turned into a museum. Structural Repairs (EM) Sdn Bhd was appointed to repair and restore the building to transform the heritage building to a museum for tourism purpose.

Restoration & Conservation Project Of Istana Hulu (SRK Raja Mazwin), Kuala Kangsar, Perak Darul Ridzuan

History

Istana Hulu (formerly known as the Istana Kota) is located on Bukit Chandan in Kuala Kangsar, not far from the renowned Ubudiah Mosque.

Year 1903 – The palace was constructed in 1903, during the reign of Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, and was designed in the style of Victorian architecture.
Year 1916 – Sultan Abdul Jalil, his son and successor, moved into the palace in 1916.
Year 1954 – The palace was taken over by the Ministry of Education in 1954, and it was later transformed into Istana Kota National School.
Year 1970 – It was converted into the Raja Perempuan Mazwin School, named after the wife of Sultan Idris Shah.
Year 2002 – Eventually, however, the school also moved out, and the building was left unused for many years until around 2002, when the state museum authorities began restoration work on it.

Background Of The Restoration And Conservation Project

In year 2002, Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd was engaged by JKR to conduct rehabilitation & restoration work on the Istana Hulu and conversion from a palace into a museum building. Now, it is called the Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery, which was officially opened in 2003.

In February 2002, a visual inspection was carried out. The objective of the inspection is to identify the defects and determine an appropriate restoration proposal. The restoration proposal provided herein was derived after a review of the following information:

(i) Information provided in the Consulting Engineer’s strengthening and restoration proposal;
(ii) Information gathered from site personnel;
(iii) Historical information of the structure;
(iv) Visual inspection of the structure and documentation of defects.

Visual Observation

The following observations were recorded during the site inspection: –

(i) Delamination of the existing plaster on the external façade resulting in exposure of bricks;
(ii) Dampness uprising;
(iii) Algae and small growths on the building façade and balcony;
(iv) Defects on wood elements such as cracking of window panels etc;
(v) Old paint too thick on the historic wood window (to be preserved);
(vi) Peeling of paint on timber elements, chalking of old paints on building façade

Repair Strategy

The following repair strategies were performed for Istana Hulu: –

(i) Treatment to timber elements prior to steel plate bonding works & restoration of defective timber;
(ii) Passive fire protection to timer elements;
(iii) External façade treatment;
(iv) Dampness uprising treatment;
(v) Restoration of rood clay tiles;
(vi) Waterproofing

The above restoration strategies have been taken into the consideration proposed changes to the structure for adaptive re-use of the Istama Hulu and the existing condition of the structure due to aging process of the building elements and environmental factors.

There is also a souvenir shop selling items related to the Perak sultanate.

“KUCHING, July 15 2022: Rumah Sri Aman, where the Sri Aman Declaration was signed between Sarawak government and the communists on October 21, 1973, will be turned into a museum next year. Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the launch of the Sri Aman Museum will be in line with the Declaration’s 50th anniversary next year.”

History

The town was formerly known as Simanggang before it was given the name Sri Aman. The town of Sri Aman is a bustling center especially at the morning market that sells an astonishing range of jungle products, agricultural produce, local handicrafts as well as fresh- water fish and prawns. There are many coffee shops that provide Malay and Chinese cuisine. Sri Aman is also a popular rest-stop for visitors traveling further up to the Batang Ai National Park or for those traveling onwards to the central and northern cities of Sarawak. It is also where thousands gather to watch the benak (tidal bore) and a festival has been built around this natural occurrence.

Rumah Sri Aman or previously known as Rumah Segi Lapan (Octagonal House) was built during Rajah Brooke reigned. It was known as the octagon building due to its unique structure, which included eight walls designed. Situated high on a hill, the white house was formerly known as the Government Rest House. It was used as an administrative center where it houses several government departments. On 21 October 1973, Rumah Sri Aman had witnessed the signing of ‘Peace Declaration’ between Sarawak Government and North Kalimatan Communist Party (PARAKU) which ended the confrontation of Malaysia- Indonesia. Today, Rumah Sri Aman has been conserved and has become one of the iconic buildings in Sri Aman Town.

Step 2: Treat the brick wall with damp proof course, a moisture barrier to prevent rising dampness.

Step 3: Apply cocoon treatment for brick wall to absorb the salt inside the brick

Step 4: To improve the property of the brick walls

Step 5: Apply lime plaster after the completion of treatment of brick walls.

Step 6: Apply finishing lime wash to the wall.

Step 7: Apply bituminous self-adhesive performed waterproofing or damp-proof membrane on the floor.

History

In Melaka City, Melaka, Malaysia, there is a historical traditional Malay village known as The Morten Village (Malay: Kampung Morten). The town is named after Frederick Joseph Morten, a British land revenue collector in British Malaya.
The area used to be a quiet place during the 1960s and 1970s. Subsequently it was designated a history village under Malacca’s Preservation and Conservation Enactment in 1989, the region has since developed to become a popular tourist destination.
There are more than 100 typical Malay homes.

Scope of Works:

Scope 1: Painting works to building	-Scrap & sand to remove loose paint. -Apply 2 coats of approved paint by using roller or brush.
Scope 2: Roof painting and waterproofing	-Clean the roof surface by using water jet. -Damaged & broken roof sheet to be replaced with roof sheet. -Loose nail to be replaced. Seal the nail holes by using polyurethane sealant. -Apply 2 coats of approved coating by using spray or brush.
Scope 3: Termite treatment	-Whole building to be sprayed with approved anti-termite chemical treatment. -Drill hole into soil especially surrounding the building columns & walls. Inject approved anti-termite chemical into soil.
Scope 4: Restore gable triangle	-Damaged timber frame to be replaced. Damaged facial sheet to be replaced with new piece. -Remove the rust or existing paint on the sheet surface by using scrap or wire brushing. -Apply 2 coats of approved protective coating.

Introduction

Built in 1965 at a cost of KMIO million (USD2.42 million). the National Mosque (or Masjid Negara) is one of Southeast Asia’s largest mosques with a unique modem design embodying contemporary expressions of traditional Islamic art, calligraphy and orientation. Jointly designed by three architects of the Public Works Department (Or Jabatan Kerja Raya-JKR), namely Howard Ashley, Hisham Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim, the National Mosque features a 73-metre-high minaret and an 18-pointed star concrete main roof reflecting an open umbrella, with the cap of the minaret resembling a folded one. The multifold umbrella-like roof symbolises a renewed awakening and the aspirations of a newly-independent nation, as Malaysia had gained her independence from the British on 31st August 1957. Apart from the multi-fold umbrellalike roof, the National Mosque also has massive flat roofs covering a total area of approximately 33,000mt. The flat roofs accommodate many mosaic-finished domes, mosaic-finished pyramid roofs, sunken roofs and skylight roofs. The differing designs of the roof types are rare and hardly found In any mosque design in the country.

The National Mosque boasts a large prayer hell that can accommodate up to 15,000 worshipers at any one time, especially for the Friday prayer. The main prayer hall is surrounded by a covered deep verandah which serves a dual function, that of an additional space for prayer and also for cross-ventilation in response to the local climatic conditions. The mosque complex also has a multipurpose hall, mausoleum, library and administration office as well as open courtyards with reflecting pools and water fountains. The mausoleum is reserved for the tombs of national heroes of rise country. Located on a 13-acre landscaped garden near the Lake Garden in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the National Mosque is one of the main tourist attractions in the capital city. Both Muslims and non-Muslims alike are only allowed into the mosque building wearing a modest attire of robes and hcadscarves as a sense of submission, peace and respect.
