It is important to carefully assess the significance of the structural cracks. To implement the correct repair solution, you must accurately determine the extent and cause of cracking.

A few factors might cause the concrete to crack such as thermal expansion and contraction, settlement, overload etc. All of these factors can result in internal and external stress that shows up as large and small cracks.

In many cases, however, there is uncertainty as to what to do about cracks. We always being contacted by anxious building managers and owners. “Many times, a week, people send us photos of cracking at their facilities asking for advice.”

There are several ways to categorise concrete cracks. Putting them into two categories—structural and non-structural—is one main method. The building’s structural integrity is impacted by structural cracking. It is especially concerning when support beams, columns, and load-bearing areas exhibit cracking. Some cracks in structural concrete allow the interior reinforcing steel to corrode, which further weakens the structure.

Contrarily, non-structural cracks do not compromise the integrity of the building, though they might need to be fixed for aesthetic purposes if there is a water leak or in order to take preventative measures to stop the cracks from getting worse over time and eventually becoming structural.

Another factor to examine is the cracks’ width, length, and depth. If hairline cracks are located at the right place, they usually pose no trouble. However, if they occur frequently, it may be a sign of an underlying stress problem that need attention. Cracks that are greater than 0.015 inches or more should, in general, be looked into. The probability of losing aggregate interlock increases with width. However, cracks down to 0.005 inches can be repaired.

Fixing broken windows and doors, loose cabinet hinges, and other similar simple carpentry tasks fall under this category. It can also apply to replacing separated bricks on walls or a rusted piece of steel sheet from the roof. It can also mean to repair bricks and walls damaged by car bumps or resident comings and goings.

It might be challenging to distinguish which jobs go under general repair since individuals frequently do not realize that some works are caused by latent defect (those that cannot be seen).

A basic rule of thumb, however, is that there is a good possibility the works in question are generalized if they are simple, primitive, and readily fixed with hand tools.

Can a repairman look at the issue and fix it that week, or do you need to block off a section of your building so that construction professionals can check at the problem? When concrete structures are reinforced and repaired with CFRP, the ambient temperature shouldn’t consistently exceed 60 C. One the one hand, epoxy is the most common type of glue used to adhere carbon fibre sheets. The adhesives break down or soften when the temperature rises over the glass transition temperature (Tg), which eliminates the shear tension between the fibres and keeps them from buckling. On the other hand, CFRP will plainly oxidise under aerobic conditions when the temperature is higher than 400 C, and the combustion would generate hazardous smoke.

It is discovered that a CFRP-strengthened structure cannot easily meet the fire resistance standards in the absence of any fire prevention measures. Therefore, adopting sensible precautions to increase the fire resistance of CFRP- strengthened reinforced concrete structures is crucial

Following reinforcement, the buildings’ required fire protection grades should be achieved using fire-resistant materials and associated treatment techniques. When reinforced structures are placed in other special environments, efficient protection materials should be chosen based on the specific situation. Currently, thick fire-retardant coating, ultra-thin fire- retardant coating, fire prevention board, and ordinary cement mortar are the main fire protection materials utilised in CFRP-strengthened reinforced concrete structures.

Thick fire-retardant coating – Thick fire-retardant coatings work by using the good thermal insulation of high-efficiency insulation materials that are already present in the coatings and the heat absorption effect of additives to prevent and consume fire heat from reaching the surface of the substrate, thereby reducing the substrate’s critical temperature. In addition to its apparent benefits in terms of fire resistance, thick fire retardant coatings also have the advantages of being water-borne, inexpensive, and weather resistant.

Ultra-thin fire-retardant coating – A light porous carbonised foam layer is created when the coating expands and foams during firing, effectively preventing heat from transferring to the substrate. In an experiment, it was discovered that reinforced beams with ultra-thin fire-retardant coatings for fire protection initially had wider cracks in the coating, which slowly filled as the foaming thickness increased. In comparison to thick fireproof coating, ultra-thin fireproof coating exhibits lower fire resistance. In addition to the wire mesh between coatings and CFRP, a small amount of quartz sand should be sprayed outside to improve the adhesion between coatings and CFRP.

Fire prevention board – It is made mostly of inorganic materials, to which different modified materials are then added following a certain process. This type of board exhibits good dimensional stability and fire insulation performance while retaining some strength in a fire.

Cement mortar – The surface of the reinforcement components will be coated or sprayed with cement mortar. Mortar made of cement is not fire-resistant. Under the circumstance of a low fire-proof limit, it is suggested that regular cement mortar can also be employed as a fire-proof protective method for strengthening concrete beams. CFRP should be protected against early shedding by being set between cement mortar and U-shaped steel wire mesh. To reinforce the steel wire mesh, expansion screws should be installed at the top of the beam on both sides.

It is important that we should
learn and identify the crack patterns
accordingly. The importance of identifying the crack patterns includes:

Safety – It is arguably the most vital factor to consider when identifying about concrete cracks. Cracks in concrete can occasionally be a sign of a building’s structural stability. As a result, a crack in the concrete could indicate the impending catastrophic failure of a key component of the building’s structure, such as a concrete post, the perimeter foundation, or the basement wall.

Reduce repair cost – Property owners will have a better notion of what mitigating measures to use, where to use them, and how to employ them if they are aware of the fundamentals of concrete cracks, their causes, and the various repair choices. A shrinking crack is an illustration of this. Shrinkage cracks may appear exceedingly foreboding and worrisome to the untrained eye. If the property owners don’t take reasonable precautions, they may find up spending more than necessary to address what is typically a cosmetic issue.

Evaluate of urgency of repair – Understanding the fundamentals of concrete cracks will help property owners determine how urgently repairs must be made. For instance, cracks caused by one-time, uniform foundation settlement may not need repairs as urgently as cracks which are still an active problem. Knowing about concrete cracks can at the very least help property owners understand how important it is to seek professional guidance when faced with various forms of concrete cracks.

In order to create a usable image of
why and how to address these cracks
, cracks on a plan are mapped out, including joint positions, joint types, and any places of constraint which is known as
cracks mapping.

Dilapidations Surveys

What causes honeycomb in concrete?

Poor workability of concrete – Consistency and cohesion are two components of concrete’s workability. The water cement ratio and aggregate cement ratio have a significant impact in influencing the workability of concrete. Low water content, high temperature, and an unsuitable fine-to-coarse aggregate ratio can result in poor workability.

Defective formwork – Grout can seep through formwork joints or holes if the joints are loose or the formwork is not leak-proof. As a result, the grout will flow out during compaction, resulting in honeycomb in the concrete.

Improper concrete compaction – In order to improve the density of the freshly poured concrete, air must be removed from the mixture and the aggregate particles must be compacted. Various techniques are used to compact the concrete. such as manual compaction, vibration-based compaction, etc. When concrete is compacted using the vibration method, excessive vibration leads to separated concrete. Similar to this, concrete that has been under vibrated will also allow honeycombs to form.

Incorrect placement of the rebar or poor detailing – Because of inadequate detailing or poor and inefficient workmanship, reinforcement bars put too closely together or too close to formwork will entrap the bigger aggregate pieces.

Concrete segregation – The separation of the components of freshly cast concrete is known as segregation. A concrete sample is not only weak if it begins to separate, but it will also develop voids or honeycombs.

Let’s take a step-by-step look at the concrete.

Step 1: Visual inspection or a non-destructive test, such as the Impact-echo test, can be used to determine the size and depth of the honeycombed area. You can also inspect and hit the hammer of blows. If it makes a hollow sound, the area there has honeycombing.

Step 2: Use a hammer or wire brush to remove all the loose materials and dust from that area before starting any repairs. Avoid using strong forces, such as electrical chippers, at this stage of concrete honeycomb repair to prevent concrete damage around the honeycomb area.

Step 3: Before making repairs or replacements, wet the concrete surface.

Step 4: If the honeycomb area is tiny and the reinforcement can be protected by the concrete cover due to its quality, it can be repaired by patching with mortar of similar color to the base concrete.

Step 5: Cutting away the defective concrete and replacing it with new concrete that has been coated with the proper bonding agent is required if the honeycomb covers a substantial area and has reached the reinforcement or deeper.

Step 6: If voids are dispersed throughout and deep inside, grouting is definitely necessary. Place formwork if required before pouring the grout. Apply the appropriate repair material, such as non-shrinkage concrete grout, high strength concrete grout, etc. by grouting, if formwork is not employed.
