As a leading expert in structural and heritage restoration in Malaysia, Mr. Robert Yong shared insights on the challenges and importance of preserving Malaysia’s historical buildings while upgrading them for modern safety and usability.

🏛️ A Spotlight on Heritage Conservation in Malaysia

In the interview, Mr. Robert Yong highlighted the unique techniques used to restore aging structures without compromising their original architecture. The conservation project, located at The National Mosque of Malaysia (Masjid Negara) involved:

  • Careful assessment of the building’s original materials
  • Use of non-invasive structural strengthening methods
  • Detailed façade and masonry repairs
  • Coordination with heritage consultants and local authorities

“Conservation is not just about repairing a building — it’s about telling a story that lasts for generations,” he said.

🏗️ Why Conservation Work Matters

With urban development on the rise, many historical buildings face the risk of deterioration or demolition. Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd has made it our mission to bridge the gap between preservation and modernization.

We believe that every heritage building deserves a second life — one that honours the past while serving the present.

Introduction

You may have marvelled at Malaysia’s iconic skyscrapers or strolled past heritage buildings in UNESCO cities like Penang or Melaka. But have you ever wondered — who preserves these structures behind the scenes, ensuring they remain standing strong for generations to come?

One of the key figures behind these preservation efforts is none other than Robert Yong, founder of Structural Repairs (M) Sdn Bhd — a specialist in structural restoration and heritage conservation.

Robert Yong’s Journey: From Newspaper Staff to Structural Specialist

Born and raised in a humble family in the town of Kampar, Perak, Robert Yong’s career didn’t start in construction. His first job was at a newspaper, but a chance opportunity brought him into the waterproofing trade. From there, he studied relentlessly, gaining hands-on knowledge, and eventually founded Structural Repairs, which has grown into one of Malaysia’s top names in structural restoration.

40 Years of Expertise in Structural Repair and Building Preservation

Since establishing the company in 1985, Robert Yong and his team have completed over a thousand projects, including:

  • Roof repair and waterproofing for National Mosque of Malaysia
  • Structural strengthening for SMART Tunneland Karak Highway bridges
  • Façade restoration of Berjaya Times Square
  • Conservation of A Famosa Fortressin Melaka
  • Restoration of The Whiteaways Arcadein Penang
  • Rehabilitation of Rumah Tangsiin Kuala Lumpur
  • Restoration work on Capitol Theatrein Singapore

These iconic projects demonstrate the company’s unmatched technical strength and unwavering dedication to building preservation.

Innovation Meets Heritage: A Balance of Technology and Tradition

In heritage conservation, Robert advocates the use of modern tools such as:

  • 3D laser scanning
  • Infrared thermography
  • BIM (Building Information Modelling)

He also emphasizes traditional materials and methods — such as natural limewash, custom-made Chinese porcelain tiles from Jingdezhen, and clay roof tiles from Europe — to ensure that restoration stays authentic to the original building.

“We’re not just fixing bricks and beams — we’re restoring the soul and memory of a building.”
